Brooklyn Typography Tour…

brooklyn-typography4Paul Shaw has done this great photo essay for AIGA’s website on all the different types and histories of signage in and throughout Brooklyn. I am definitely a fan of fonts and typography so I can appreciate this solely on a visual level but it is nice to have the history and rundowns as well. Check AIGA for the full breakdown and keep reading for a few more of my favorites.

Terry Richardson on CyanaTV

terry richardson Cyana TV recently shot a three part video interview with the flannel wearing, T4 snapping Terry Richardson. Richardson sheds some light on his personal style and the signature look of his ‘snapshot’ photography. I love the insight he gives into his style of shooting and how he made a name for himself in an industry that in the early stages wasn’t to sure what to make of him. Woolrich Woolen Mills Fall/Winter 2009/10

woolrich-fall-2009With spring collections just starting to trickle into shops all over, this means its time to start checking for previews of the following season, Fall/Winter 2009. With Woolrich Woolen Mills being one of my favorite lines at the moment, I was very pleased to see the Fall/Winter 2009 collection being previewed on Selectism. The line is looking very solid with great use of pattern and color and some interesting fits, giving the pieces an almost anti-fit look. I love these pieces by themselves and also layered as a full complete look, it is the versatility in the line that makes it really stand out. Check more after the jump. Continue reading

computers et all

the other day at work my 50 year-old boss explained to me what computers were like when he first started working with them in newsrooms in the 1970′s: apparently, ‘if you saw the lights flicker you ran across the damn room to pull out your card, because any power fluctuation would wipe away all the work you’d done.’ I then asked him where he thought computers were headed.. to which he replied that he couldn’t even really imagine where else you could take them. I mean, we both have iPhones, so I kind of understand what he’s getting at. the rise of the computer and the crazy places it will take us (even in my lifetime) is an intense thing to think about. a look back shows us how far we’ve come in such a relatively short amount of time.

growing up online?! it seems like a pretty redundant statement, not even a decade later. so where to next.. apparently in next twenty years, ‘There will be 32 times more technical progress during the next half century than there was in the entire 20th century, and one of the outcomes is that artificial intelligence could be on a par with human intellect by the 2020s.’ (source). oh, and ‘If you draw the timelines, realistically by 2050 we would expect to be able to download your mind into a machine, so when you die it’s not a major career problem. If you’re rich enough then by 2050 it’s feasible. If you’re poor you’ll probably have to wait until 2075 or 2080 when it’s routine. We are very serious about it. That’s how fast this technology is moving: 45 years is a hell of a long time in IT.’ (source).

it seems to me like these kind of projections have pretty serious philosophical implications. I don’t know what’s gonna go down in the future, but I damn sure hope we think it through first.. emerging ethicist market anyone?

throwback – The Blood Brothers

one of my all-time favorite bands and one helluva way to get hyped for a ride / the day in general, the world misses the Blood Brothers. at the forefront of the post-everything movement in hardcore alongside bands like Refused, the Brothers kept it super real for a decade, based out of Seattle. for their full bio and links to the many projects that have come from the remnants of the band, check here.

Thom Browne + Moncler FW 09

moncler-thom-browne-gamme-bleu-1

yes, High Snobriety beat me to it, but this is just too good not to repost – the Thom Browne and Moncler collaboration coming fall/winter 2009. pairing Browne, considered by many to be the most progressive well-know designer in America, and Moncler, who’s outdoors wear I drooled over previously, and the result is magic. I really enjoy the palate – its good to see Browne didn’t stray from where he excels.

Sleeveface

Sleeveface is an amazing collaborative project that has now spawned in to a book.. the concept is simple – ‘one or more persons obscuring or augmenting any part of their body or bodies with record sleeve(s) causing an illusion.’ pick up the book here.

Gordon Ball

first of all, welcome to 84/85 on WordPress! we transfered most of our content from our blogspot, but not all. it is still archived there for reference.

Gordon Ball is a photographer based in Montreal, Quebec. shooting portraits, stills and spontaneity, his style resembles that of the original grime/glam dichotomy himself, Terry Richardson. I especially enjoy the portraiture, with reality translating through the beautiful subjects. Ball shows at galleries all over Canada and the US, check his website for details.
