Here is an interesting project that is currently taking place in NYC, the ‘New York Street Advertising Takeover,’ which is basically a mission to take back public space. There are a large number of non-permitted, illegally placed advertising and billboards throughout New York and other major American cities. A good majority of them are executed by a company called ‘NPA City Outdoor,’ targeting Construction fences, scaffolding and billboards with their ‘wildposters.’ So in an effort to combat this invasion of visual space the New York Street Advertising Takeover is painting over or white washing these illegal advertisements in their city. As well as painting over the guerrilla advertisements, they have reclaimed some of them by letting local artists repaint them with their use of the space. Check the video for the full breakdown…
