Triple Aught Design

Stopped by Haven yesterday to kick it with the homie Jeremy, and we got in to the topic of serious technical gear, and the outdoorsmen and/or nerds for whom it’s a dedicated passion… Haven now carries Acronym, and combined with White Mountaineering’s more tech offerings, they’ve attracted a new clientele who are looking for a performance/styling blend, more so than just ‘fashion.’

Enter SF’s Triple Aught Design, makers of fine soft goods and accessories. Liking what I’m seeing, simple functional outerwear and other rad pieces like knives, axes, and carribeeners. I think the fact that this post is even on 84/85 is indicative of where we’re headed: in the four years we’ve been doing this blog(!), a lot has changed for us… I for one no longer work in menswear, and really haven’t been too excited about what’s going on in contemporary men’s fashion, let alone the way it’s presented… I think it’s safe to say both Brendan and I are more concerned with a balance of function and aesthetic these days, and hence the blog will inevitably reflect this direction.

Basically, if you’re looking for another surface-level menswear blog, this probably isn’t it, and we’ll likely continue to move further away from that in to the future. Stuff like TAD will keep getting posted, and combined with the mc/bike/art/music blend we accompany the clothes with, I’m pretty stoked on where this is all headed. Thanks for reading this tirade, and click through for more Triple Aught Design.

CYC Sample Sale

This post is Vancouver-centric, so apologies if you’re reading from elsewhere and this makes you angry – but CYC Manufacturing Corp (Vancouver producers of 84/85 staples Wings + Horns and Reigning Champ) are having their annual sample sale for the next few days, and from what I hear about years past, the selection and prices are ridiculous. Unlike most sample sales, apparently CYC brings out sizes small through to XL, meaning that all can attend, not just those of mannequin stature. Selection updated daily throughout, so no rush to get there today… although I’m a sceptic and will be headed down this afternoon haha.

Respect: Skull Skates

What to say about Skull Skates… their illustrious history in skateboarding goes beyond Canada or North America, having influenced the progression and aesthetic of the sport worldwide. If you need a history lesson on how the brand has evolved over time, go here. In Vancouver we’ve got one of the few flagship stores, P.D.’s Hotshop, purveyor of all elements of the Skull Skates empire. What I’ll focus on in this post is the apparel – one of the most recognizable brands on the planet, there is so much good stuff from SS that I could pretty much only wear this gear and be satisfied. Plus you rep a company that has given so much to the community and culture that they helped create and continue to support, a company with deep roots in Vancouver, one of the few visible brands from the westcoast with any sort of credible history. The point is Skull Skates is rad, and they definitely fall under the ‘respect’ category: click through for more of my choice apparel picks.

Made in U.S.A. Vintage Outerwear: Fall 2011

Carhartt Camo Vest Vintage Made in USA

Made in USA Sherpa Denim jacket wrangler

Its really starting to feel like fall out here on the westcoast, and with the leaves starting to turn and that crisp feeling in the air it’s time to bring out the warmer outerwear staples from the collection. Here is a look at a few outerwear pieces from my vintage collection, with a focus on made in U.S.A. pieces. I decided to break out 5 styles; first off is a Carhartt work vest in duck camo with a quilted interior, second is a US military jacket that I have waxed myself a few times, next is a classic CPO Shirt/Coat done in a heavy wool, I particularly like the color combo on this one, rounding down with the Wrangler Range Coat which is a 14oz denim outer with heavy sherpa lining, and lastly is a Woolrich Blanket lined jacket in tan canvas outer with a beautiful multi color removable blanket liner. Read through to have a detailed look at each jacket.

84/ Cycle Commuter Soundtrack

Every morning I step up to a 5+ km cycle commute to the office, rain or shine. Generally this includes me making ‘bold’ moves in traffic, and a shaken fist or words exchanged with motorists: these are the joys of mashing through the city. I really enjoy the experience, gets the blood flowing before work and embeds exercise in my day. It also gives me a chance to bump some proper hardcore in my earbuds, which definitely adds to my stoke. Seeing as it’s now basically full-on westcoast fall/winter and the ride ain’t getting any easier, I thought I’d share some motivational tunes just in case you need something to get you pumped up for your ride/bus trip/brisk walk/whatever. Some new jams and some classics, more after the jump.

Support: BNE Water Foundation

BNE is a world famous graffiti artist who gained much of his attention from doing a very large scale DIY sticker campaign spanning across the globe. BNE has been an active and prolific graffiti writer since the early 90′s, know strictly as a graffiti bomber, which means mostly using stickers, tags, and throw-ups to get your name up, illegally (don’t confuse him with any of these ‘street artists’). I respect BNE immensely as a writer, but the main focus of doing this post is to shed some light on BNE’s latest project, BNE Water Foundation which is a non-profit organization started in 2011 as an effort to supply clean, safe drinking water and sanitation to people in poverty stricken and undeveloped areas in countries around the world.

“We are a global movement dedicated to bringing clean, safe water, and sanitation to people living in extreme poverty. About one billion people right now do not have access to clean drinking water. 42,000 people die every week due to unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions. 90% of these deaths are children under five years old. It’s unconscionable that we allow this to go on. Join us and be part of the solution.”

BNE is using his name and voice to do something positive with the exposure he has gained for himself through tireless nights of hard work hitting the streets. This is a project that I thoroughly support, and if you do too you are now able to make a donation to the foundation through the website. You can also (for the first time ever) purchase BNE sticker packs for $20 to help support the cause, and in the near future purchase original, one of a kind art from a wide range of artist from their online gallery (the online gallery is coming soon). Show your support to this great cause by making a donation, or by simply spreading the word. Head over to BNE Water for all the info.

Aberrican Me: Ross Capicchioni

Put aside 15 min today to watch these two videos. Produced by The Berrics, the story of Ross Capicchioni is something else.

edit: pulled from youtube, now only on The Berrics, parts one and two.

Summer Rap Soundtrack Youtube Playlist

Besides making and playing the techno, I’ve listened to a lot of rap this summer. There’s so many good producers and MCs in the game right now, especially of the ‘weird’ variety, those who hip hop traditionalists seem to despise. And while I don’t feel anything Odd Future related (overt unrelenting homophobia just ain’t my thing brah), their many contemporaries have been killing it, from The Jealous Guys to Man Attrakionz to the onslaught of new Lil B material. Juicy J has provided a never-ending supply of quality music and entertaining web presence, from his Twitter stream to his Ustream sessions (legendary). Kirko Bangz gives me a Drake alternative when I want to floss, good to see Texas on some new new. Lex Luger keeps making a quality beat here and there, everything Clams touched turns to gold, and Riff Raff is on some Andy Kaufman/Tony Clifton life parody ish. Rap is amazing right now, and old heads who want to live in the 90′s can go stand in the corner. More of my summer 2011 favourites after the jump, and please feel free to comment on how wrong/right/bad/good my tastes are.
