84/ Cycle Commuter Soundtrack

Every morning I step up to a 5+ km cycle commute to the office, rain or shine. Generally this includes me making ‘bold’ moves in traffic, and a shaken fist or words exchanged with motorists: these are the joys of mashing through the city. I really enjoy the experience, gets the blood flowing before work and embeds exercise in my day. It also gives me a chance to bump some proper hardcore in my earbuds, which definitely adds to my stoke. Seeing as it’s now basically full-on westcoast fall/winter and the ride ain’t getting any easier, I thought I’d share some motivational tunes just in case you need something to get you pumped up for your ride/bus trip/brisk walk/whatever. Some new jams and some classics, more after the jump.

Milkcrate Athletics Fall 2011

Aaron LaCrate’s Milkcrate label has just unveiled this look at their fall 2011 line, killing the NYC streetwear game as per usual. If you don’t know LaCrate’s story in the music and clothing games, this is a good primer. Loving the pieces shown here, so many references and touchpoints, paying tribute to classic brands and styles while putting a 2011 flip on everything. I would most definitely mess with the two sweats shown above, and while I appreciate the swagger, I’ll probably leave the camo bucket to Havoc or Styles P… full run after the break, click for full size.

For The Country

Filmed and edited by my good friend Ryan Lindow, For The Country follows Teppei ‘Nasty’ Iwabuchi and Yuhei ‘Marco’ Hirose on their first journey from Japan to the USA, to be part of the Red Bull Ride and Style event in San Francisco. This trip occurred within a month of the earthquake and tsunami that had just devastated Japan, so the aftermath and way forward are heavily on the minds of the two riders. Normally I don’t get down with much ‘fixed freestyle,’ but these guys have such great style and attitude, making riding look fun regardless of style. This vid was produced in conjunction with some of my favourite lines/retailers, FTC, W-BASE, and SKYLMT, and my studio partner Rob Squire and I were happy to contribute a song to this video, heard during the contest section; thanks to Ryan for having us involved with this quality project!

Summer Rap Soundtrack Youtube Playlist

Besides making and playing the techno, I’ve listened to a lot of rap this summer. There’s so many good producers and MCs in the game right now, especially of the ‘weird’ variety, those who hip hop traditionalists seem to despise. And while I don’t feel anything Odd Future related (overt unrelenting homophobia just ain’t my thing brah), their many contemporaries have been killing it, from The Jealous Guys to Man Attrakionz to the onslaught of new Lil B material. Juicy J has provided a never-ending supply of quality music and entertaining web presence, from his Twitter stream to his Ustream sessions (legendary). Kirko Bangz gives me a Drake alternative when I want to floss, good to see Texas on some new new. Lex Luger keeps making a quality beat here and there, everything Clams touched turns to gold, and Riff Raff is on some Andy Kaufman/Tony Clifton life parody ish. Rap is amazing right now, and old heads who want to live in the 90′s can go stand in the corner. More of my summer 2011 favourites after the jump, and please feel free to comment on how wrong/right/bad/good my tastes are.

Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man

I don’t know how it took me until last night to see this movie, but wow… maybe the best, most shameless, action-packed biker/robbery/drug film I’ve ever seen. Featuring an ‘all-star’ cast (including Tia Carerra, a Baldwin, Vanessa Williams, Tom Sizemore, etc), Mickey Rourke and Don Johnson blaze across the western US on a wild ride, with an wesome late-80′s / early-90′s soundtrack to boot. The opening sequence is pretty untouchable, and might have made a Bon Jovi fan out of me… check it out above.

It’s Better In The Wind – Final Trailer

While I wait for a few forthcoming clothing posts to get themselves together, here’s the final trailer for It’s Better In The Wind, put togther for EDITION29. We’ve been following Scott Toepfer for a while now, as his photo and video style is just the right kind of stylized, showcasing wide open desert planes and mountain backdrops in a washed out, hyper-real manner that makes me want to close the laptop and get out on the road asap. Looking forward to seeing the feature film, and you can check more of Toepfer’s work on his vimeo.

Brixton: Troy Elmore

Here is a great little video from the boys over at Brixton which features the newest addition to the Brixton fam, Troy Elmore. We caught a glimpse of Troy in the Brixton fall ’11 video we posted a few weeks ago but this is a full look at the kid ripping it up on his sporty, in the waves and on his beach cruiser and skate. Super chill vid, with a nice soundtrack from The Boy Toys.

Strangeloop ‘Fields’ A/V Experience

LA’s Brainfeeder collective has been known from day one for providing a complete A/V experience at their now-legendary clubnight, and while an impressive lineup of resident beatsmiths certainly is a large part of that, in-house visuals don Strangeloop (also an accomplished producer) seals the deal with his highly-complex synced projections. In this new A/V project for Fields TV he goes even deeper in to the wormhole, in his words creating ‘an environment that leans more in the direction of Steve Reich-inspired minimalism’ than the beat-centric style people may expect of him. This video+soundscape is a tour de force: lately I’ve been loving beat-less productions, and this evolving, nuanced piece is a stunning marriage of warm synth textures and the high-compression production techniques the BF collective have perfected … check it out above (make sure to go full screen), but also make sure to visit the Fields site for the full experience.
