Wants And Needs: Timex 80 Watch

Picture 26

Up next on the ‘wants and needs’ is the Timex 80 watch, a classic style sports watch from the Timex vaults with a clean, minimal style available in an assortment of different flavors. I have a pretty solid collection of Casio’s and I think that one of these would fit right in. With the very reasonable price tag of about $50-$80, i can deal with that, now the only problem is which color to choose? More pics after the jump…

Available at now at: Opening Ceremony and Oki-Ni.

Mash SF Spring/Summer 2009

mash-sf-summer-collection-2

Mash SF have been doing it big for a long time now. Pioneering and always classy, these guys have nothing to do with trends: they just ride hard, and dismantle hills with that signature west-coast style. Their spring/summer 2009 collection includes collaborations with Defeet, Lazy Monk, Chuey, and SAG, as well as their own tees, and goes beyond clothing in to lights and a MP3 player. Incorporating all ends of cycling needs, Mash certainly hasn’t limited themselves to the fixed gear scene, which is to the betterment of themselves and people who ride bikes in general. More products after the jump.

iPhone 3GS vs. OS 3.0 Software Update

Picture 1We’ve spoken of the 3.0 software update here on 84/85 before, but at that point in time there was no talk on the iPhone 3GS.. and while I’m super excited for landscape typing (pictured above), there are some features being released on the new iPhone that won’t be available to us previous owners. For instance, new iPhone owners will get a 3.0 megapixel camera, video and editing capabilities, voice control, and the use of a compass with the GPS maps (something I could definitely use from time to time..). And while the software update will bring me such goodies as the aforementioned landscape typing, copy and paste functionality (something long overdue), and spotlight search (the ability to search your whole phone, just like on your Mac OS), I kind of feel like I’m going to be missing out.. but I guess that’s the way the game goes, you’ll always need to upgrade. Regardless, I’m stoked for June 17th when the OS 3.0 will be available for download. Check Apple for all the details.

Harvest Green Project

harvest6

The ‘Harvest Green project’ was a winning project designed by romses architects for the ’2030 challenge’ which was a recent competition held by the city of Vancouver to address climate change and try to come up with a model for greener and denser development in cities. Here is a write up about the Harvest project: “The concept of ‘harvest’ is explored in the project through the vertical farming of vegetables, herbs, fruits, fish, egg laying chickens, and a boutique goat and sheep dairy facility. in addition, renewable energy will be harvested via green building design elements harnessing geothermal, wind and solar power. the buildings have photovoltaic glazing and incorporate small and large-scale wind turbines to turn the structure into solar and wind-farm infrastructure. in addition, vertical farming potentially adds energy back to the grid via methane generation from composting non-edible parts of plants and animals. furthermore, a large rainwater cistern terminates the top of the ‘harvest tower’ providing on-site irrigation for the numerous indoor and outdoor crops and roof gardens.” Check out Designboom for the full breakdown and more pics of the project after the jump…

Kyocera EOS Concept Phone

picture-39

Here is a look at Kyocera‘s new EOS concept cell phone courtesy of Core 77. “The concept Eos envisions is a future where we have a more humanistic relationship with our phones. Appealing to our haptic senses, a soft, semi-rigid polymer skin surrounds a flexible OLED display. The metaphor of a “living” skin was used for its notions of protection and constant evolution, providing a heightened user experience. Shape memory allows keys to morph up from its surface when needed and fade away when not in use. The flexibility of the screen allows for greater adaptability of form and interaction and it maintains a compact shape (the size of a small wallet) for simple phone calls, and unfolds to reveal a large widescreen display. The device feeds off of our physical interaction with it, translating kinetic energy into an electric charge via an array of nano-scale piezoelectric generators. The more we interact with Eos, the more energy it creates – without using batteries.” And you thought your Iphone was good…More pics after the jump.

wants and needs: Lightpot

lightpot-1_sjjhw_58

created by the designers at Shulab, this indoor LED-lit pot would look great on the bedside table. I’ve always been super in to plants as the ultimate apartment decor, but have always seemed to struggle with good lighting. this solves both.

iPhone OS 3.0

picture-115

Hallelujah! iPhone OS 3.0 update will be here this summer! when I switched from Blackberry one of the features I bemoaned losing the most was the ability to cut/copy/paste, which is great for storing numbers and quoting people to other people. Apple will also include the ability to compose text and emails in ‘landscape’ mode (when the phone is sideways, allowing for a bigger keyboard), and will provide an embedded ’spotlight’ search tool to go through your entire phone, just like the one in the top right corner of your Mac OS. watch the terribly dressed Apple honchos give the full presentation here.

UGLY: How Unorthodox Thinking Will Save Design

uglycdcoming via Core77, this article by Tad Toulis of Teague Studios down in Seattle really caught my eye. with so much popular contemporary focus on ultra-clean lines, angles, and aesthetics, the concept of ‘UGLY’ looks to be a large component conservation and sustainability design in the near future, especially (as the author notes) with the influx of another 3 billion consumers by 2050. anyway, a great read – check it out here.
