Feeling It: Scott Pommier Photography

Scott Pommier is a photographer that I have been watching for a couple years now: my friend Curtis put me on to him a while ago, and ever since then I have been a huge fan. Scott documents his travels through the motorcycle and  skateboarding cultures, spending a good majority of his time in Vancouver as well as all over the west coast. He shoots on 35mm giving his photos a nostalgic feel, capturing his subject matter in a very natural manner, each shot makes you feel as though you were there. Scott Pommier is one of my favorite photographers for so many reasons, keep reading to see for yourself why, and check out his new website for the rest of his work…

New Works: Boogie

Picture 36

One of my favourite photographers as of late is the Brooklyn based photographer Boogie. Originally from Serbia, Boogie got his start in photography by documenting the civil war that broke out in his home country in the 1990′s, later moving to Brooklyn in 98 to focus on his photography career. His style is very subjective, generally very dark, documenting everything from everyday city life, to gangs , skinheads and drug users. His subject material is usually very raw and in your face, with his more recent work being much softer and more abstract. He has also been getting into shooting commercial work, working with clients such as Nike, Lee jeans and Undercover, which is also nice to see. Keep reading for a look at some of my favourite shots from his new works from over the summer, including a trip back to his homeland of Serbia.

Ruedione – Backflashes

backflashes

German graffiti artist turned photographer Ruedione has recently compiled a collection of photographs in a book titled ‘Backflashes,’ which documents graffiti artists in the process and action of painting graffiti from all over the world. Ruedione is based out of Heidelberg, Germany, starting out as a graffiti artist himself but as time went on he channeled his passion into photography, documenting the art form. The shots give insight into a very secretive lifestyle and culture that is only celebrated by a small group in society and generally unknown or a mystery to the general public. With this book, Ruedione is giving a more detailed look into the art and production of graffiti: “the images show all the tension, the adrenalin, and the kicks that graffiti writers experience.” I really like the style and anonymity of his shots as well as usage of only black and white, this should make for a good coffee table piece. Keep reading for more images from the book…

Feeling It: Ryan McGinley ‘Moonage Daydream’

moonage

Ryan McGinley recently did this beautiful shoot titled ‘Moonage Daydream’ for the Vice magazine photography issue. We featured McGinley’s Wrangler ad campaign a little while back, with this series taking a much brighter approach but still incorporating his trademark style, nakedness. I love the look of this shoot, its has a very surreal feel to it, showing once again that McGinley is one artist that actually lives up to his hype. Full series after the jump…

R.I.P Dash Snow

dash snow6

It saddens me to say that the talented artist Dash Snow has recently passed on. The terrible news has been circulating around the net today that Snow has died last night of a heroin overdose at the age of 27. We had featured a great photoshoot with Snow a little while ago as well as some of his Polaroid work on Tinyvices. This really is a shame and a great loss as he was a talented artist who has been making moves in the right direction as of late. Snow lived a self imposed hard life, growing up in the downtown New York scene, writing graffiti, going in and out of jail, doing drugs and running from the law for years, he lived a troubled life but this is the life he chose for himself. It is a shame that he had to go so soon but he will live on through his artwork and his ‘Sace’ tags throughout New York city and abroad. He leaves behind a daughter and a legacy which he created for himself, inspiring a new generation of young artists along the way. Keep reading for a few more of my favourite pics of Dash Snow the infamous…

Keegan Gibbs

gibbs4

Here is a look at some of the photography work from one of my personal favorites, Keegan Gibbs. I first started seeing him through the Seventh Letter graffiti crew from Los Angeles who he does a great deal of work with. He has many different styles of shooting but it is his action shots of writers such as Revok and Augor that are truly amazing. He captures the writers in some of their most raw and purest moments, painting their names in some of the most high profile places such as high atop a roof or on the side of a billboard. Keegan is right there risking it all for the sake of the art, and this is why you have to appreciate not only the talent but also the effort that goes into documenting one of the most illusive and anonymous genres of art. Keep reading for more of my favorites and check Keegangibbs.com for the rest of his works…

New Favorite Blog: Backyard Bill

bill6I have yet another addition to add to the ‘New Favorite Blog’ feature here at 84/85, and this time around it’s a personal style blog by photographer William Gentle, entitled ‘Backyard Bill’. Its a great concept, capturing people in a few of their everyday looks on their own turf, complete with a little interview with each person. The photography is beautifully done and the people and looks captured are nothing short of the same. Check here for the blog and keep reading for a few of my favorites…

Thanks ACL for the heads up…

Best Of: The Sartorialist

sart2

I have always loved the work of  Scott Schuman, the Sartorialist, but for a little while there I wasn’t so into his fashion ‘finds.’ It just seemed like he wasn’t on his sh*t, or maybe I just wasn’t on to his, but anyway as of late he has really been doing it for me. The looks that he is capturing lately are so on point, maybe it is the season and the weather, but all these looks I just love, from the layering to the color pallet, they are so amazing. It seems as though maybe he was just to busy with side projects and was spreading himself a little too thin, but it is nice to se him back on his grind. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the past month and a bit… Continue reading
