Summer Rap Soundtrack Youtube Playlist

Besides making and playing the techno, I’ve listened to a lot of rap this summer. There’s so many good producers and MCs in the game right now, especially of the ‘weird’ variety, those who hip hop traditionalists seem to despise. And while I don’t feel anything Odd Future related (overt unrelenting homophobia just ain’t my thing brah), their many contemporaries have been killing it, from The Jealous Guys to Man Attrakionz to the onslaught of new Lil B material. Juicy J has provided a never-ending supply of quality music and entertaining web presence, from his Twitter stream to his Ustream sessions (legendary). Kirko Bangz gives me a Drake alternative when I want to floss, good to see Texas on some new new. Lex Luger keeps making a quality beat here and there, everything Clams touched turns to gold, and Riff Raff is on some Andy Kaufman/Tony Clifton life parody ish. Rap is amazing right now, and old heads who want to live in the 90′s can go stand in the corner. More of my summer 2011 favourites after the jump, and please feel free to comment on how wrong/right/bad/good my tastes are.

Polarization Pt.2: Hornby Island MC Trip

Here is the second edition of the Polarization series here at 84/85, this time it features my most recent motorcycle trip to Hornby Island with my man Paul. If you are familiar with the Gulf islands off the west coast then you may know Hornby, it’s a small island that you have to take two ferries to get get to, but once you get there it is absolutely gorgeous. We ripped around the island a bit but mostly just relaxed at the cabin or on the beach, here is a look at some images from the trip…

Norse Projects High Summer 2011

Here is a look at Norse Projects‘ High Summer 2011 collection, which is ‘a tribute to the long light and mild temperatures of Scandinavian evenings.’ The collection features a long-sleeve shirt with chest pocket and ‘inconspicuous styling,’ as well as a heavy crew neck sweater and two beanies made from Australian Lanrossi Merino wool. This collection is a nice addition to the already solid NP spring/summer 2011 collection.

Preview: Actual Pain Snapbacks Summer 2011

What better way to follow up a Flying Coffin post with another one of our favourite North West lines, Actual Pain and a preview of their summer 2011 snapbacks. Here is a look at the Pentangled and script designs, both in black with cream which is the AP staple colorway. Check for these two styles as well as a full restock of the rest of the summer collection in the AP online store in the very near future.

Flying Coffin Summer 2011

Seattle/Hawaii hesh specialists Flying Coffin have just released their summer 2011 collection, a tight run of tees, tanks, and a couple snapbacks. Loving the shirt and cap above, some of my favourite work yet from the longstanding streetwear dons, helping keep the dirtbag crown in the pacific northwest (alongside AP)… more after the jump.

FreedMinds ‘High Quality Contraband’ Summer 2011 Lookbook

Cali lifestyle brand FreedMinds has just dropped this summer lookbook, shot on film with a raw treatment that we can definitely appreciate. I’m feeling how natural the presentation is; this is what the ‘streetwear’ and ‘fashion’ industries need, more lookbooks that showcase a line in real-life settings, not on a plastic model against a brick or white backdrop (or even worse, dudes with mustaches in a forrest). Capturing an effortless California style, FreedMinds is a line to look out for… keep reading for more.

HUF Quality Garments Summer 2011 Collection

We just featured the HUF summer 2011 lookbooks, both photo and video, now here is a look at the collection piece for piece. As always from HUF there are some solid headwear options, as well as tees, shorts, shirts and my favorite, the ‘Dirtbag Crew’ jersey. With just enough seriousness being conveyed, the line sticks to their street roots and comes correct. Keep reading for the full rundown…

Alife Summer 2011

Alife follows up their spring ’11 collection with this further run of American sportswear, keeping the street styles clean with the usual touch of irreverence that the NYC crew puts to cotton. Feeling the cuts and combos here, grown man streetwear for the downtown set. Alife was one of the first trill sneakers I ever bought with my own cash, so my loyalties have been set for over a decade now… more pics after the jump.
