Frite Nite Podcast 027

I’ve been really lucky to have made the acquaintance of Paul Salva over the past couple years through playing a few shows together and a good time kicking it at Bass Coast last summer. Him and Comma happened to be at a festival I had played in Sacramento earlier this year, and afterwards they asked me to do the latest entry in to the podcast series for their powerhouse label Frite Nite. Definitely an honour and I’m really hyped on the opportunity and the mix I turned in… if you like those house and techno vibes peep my FN Podcast #027 HERE.

Garde+Eames ‘Bricks’ LP

Ever since I moved to Vancouver in the summer my main dude Rob Squire and I have had a rotating cast of synths and drum machines in the back of his Catalog Gallery, anchored by a few key pieces. We would jam out tracks, record them, and then we finally got it together to edit some down in to proper songs. Bricks is a techno record, and we decided to give it away for free, for a bunch of reasons that are a two hour conversation in and of themselves. There’s a nice review over at FACT that will tell you a lot more and you can download the LP there as well, 320 kbps files with a .pdf booklet, all fancy like. 2011 was a really great year for me and music, if you want to hear more about that check my recap over at sub|div. And of course, many thanks if you give a listen, plenty more to come in 2012.

2010 Music Musings

It’s that time of year again, when the days fly by, there’s annoying music blaring in most shops you enter, and people start making year-end lists. The music crew I’m part of, sub|division, has been posting people’s 2010 summaries every day of December; 31 dudes and gals geeking out over what captured our interests this year… mine went up yesterday, and you can check that out here (shouts to Chris Long for the very complimentary introduction).

Floating Points

UK musician Sam Shepard (aka Floating Points) is one of the few producers who crafts that rare, truly London sound. For me, the recent work of Burial, Four Tet, Joy Obison, and Kode 9 is along the same lines; inventive and introspective, with moments of pure dance and arrangements miles ahead of their contemporaries who keep recycling the same formulas. The song above, K&G Beat, has the same emotional urgency as Underworld’s Born Slippery… probably not long until we hear it in a major motion picture. Check out Shepard’s new mix for XLR8R in tribute to the influential London club night Plastic People, and hit his Soundcloud for more streaming tracks / downloadable mixes. You can always purchase tracks in hq from Beatport. Click through for a choice Floating Points playlist for the weekend.

Pantha du Prince + Pawel

It’s been an amazing couple weeks for techno releases: first, Pantha du Prince unveiled his much-anticipated third LP, entitled ‘Black Noise,’ and it’s the beautiful, spacial trip through layers of bass, noise, bells, wood blocks, etc that we expected from the German savant. Also, his former Dial label boss Pawel finally released his long-awaited self-titled debut solo LP, and the results definitely exceed my expectations. Taking the deep romantic sound of Lawrence and Pantha and adding a slightly more thumping tech edge during certain parts of the album, Pawel has created a true standout in the already much-vaunted Dial catalogue. Above are my two favorite cuts from their respective LPs, with ‘A Nomads Retreat’ by Pantha, and ‘Kramnik’ by Pawel. Such a treat to listen to music of this calibre, with masterfully crafted soundscapes shaped through subtle progressions… looks like 2010 is going to be another great year for electronic music. You can purchase both albums in high quality on Beatport.

sub l division Podcast 01 January 2010

Self-promo time: the club night I’m involved in, sub l division, has started a podcast series, and I had the pleasure of doing the first one. Focusing on the primarily UK-based sounds I’ve been enjoying lately, I think this mix is pretty representative of how I approach a DJ set, both in song selection and mixing style. Enjoy!
